What Is Carbon Consultancy?

Carbon consultancy is a professional service that helps organisations measure, manage, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. A carbon consultant collects and verifies your emissions data, calculates your carbon footprint using recognised methodologies, identifies reduction opportunities, and produces compliant reports for regulatory, procurement, or stakeholder purposes.

The Carbon Stamp provides end-to-end carbon consultancy: from your first measurement to a published Carbon Reduction Plan, carbon neutral certification, or SECR compliance filing.

Services

Sectors We Work With

The Carbon Stamp works exclusively with UK SMEs and small businesses — organisations that need expert guidance without enterprise consulting overhead. Our clients typically have 10–500 employees.

NHS and Healthcare Suppliers

Healthcare and NHS suppliers face the most complex carbon compliance requirements in the UK. PPN 006 now applies to all NHS procurements (since April 2024), and NHS suppliers must also align with the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap (80% reduction target for 2028–2032) and relevant Trust Green Plans. The Carbon Stamp has a proven track record supporting NHS suppliers through full carbon consultancy engagements — from initial footprint measurement through to PPN 006-compliant CRP and ISO 14068 carbon neutral certification. Manufacturing and Wholesale

Manufacturers face growing carbon reporting demands from large customers, retailers, and investors — alongside PPN 006 requirements for those bidding on public sector contracts. Manufacturing Scope 3 (raw materials, production, distribution) is typically the most complex to measure and the highest-impact area for reduction. The Carbon Stamp has delivered end-to-end carbon consultancy for UK manufacturers including Advanced Coated Products (34.97% reduction year one) and Addis Housewares (full Scope 1, 2 and 3 assessment).

Construction and Civil Engineering

Construction companies tendering for government framework contracts and local authority procurements increasingly need PPN 006-compliant Carbon Reduction Plans at the pre-qualification stage. Key complexity areas include plant and machinery fuel, materials embodied carbon, and subcontractor supply chain Scope 3. The Carbon Stamp delivered a compliant CRP for J Hopkins Civil Engineering, enabling their government tender qualification. Read: PPN 006 for construction companies →

Food and Beverage

Food and beverage businesses face carbon reporting demands from supermarket and retail supply chains, B Corp certification processes, and investor ESG requirements. Agricultural ingredient supply chain, packaging, and cold chain logistics are typically the most significant Scope 3 categories. The Carbon Stamp has delivered sector-specific assessments for food and beverage businesses including craft gin distillery 6 O'Clock Gin.

Professional Services and Creative Industries

Professional services businesses, consultancies, and creative organisations typically have simpler carbon footprints but still need credible, verified data for B Corp certification, client ESG questionnaires, and sustainability reporting. The Carbon Stamp has worked with tech and professional services businesses including Moventi, as well as creative and hospitality clients such as Wake The Tiger. For SECR-qualifying companies in any sector, the Carbon Stamp delivers compliant SECR reports aligned with annual accounts disclosure requirements. Read: SECR reporting requirements →

Why Choose The Carbon Stamp?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a carbon consultant do?

Measures your Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions using GHG Protocol methodology, identifies reduction opportunities, produces compliant reports for SECR, PPN 006, or ESG disclosure, and provides strategic guidance on net zero targets and procurement compliance.

How much does a carbon consultant cost in the UK?

£1,500–£8,000+ depending on scope. Basic Scope 1 and 2 assessment from £1,500. Full assessment with CRP from £3,000–£6,000. Free consultation available.

Do you work with NHS suppliers?

Yes. We specialise in NHS PPN 06/21 and PPN 006 compliance, with a proven track record supporting healthcare suppliers in developing compliant Carbon Reduction Plans and achieving carbon neutral certification.

What is SECR reporting?

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting — mandatory for large UK companies (250+ employees or turnover over £36m). Requires annual disclosure of energy use, carbon emissions, and efficiency measures in company accounts.

Which sectors do you work with?

Healthcare, NHS suppliers, manufacturing, food & beverage, construction, professional services, and creative industries across the UK.

What is the GHG Protocol?

The GHG Protocol Corporate Standard is the international accounting framework for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. Published by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, it defines the three emission scopes (Scope 1 — direct; Scope 2 — indirect energy; Scope 3 — value chain) and provides the calculation methodology underpinning SECR, PPN 006, ISO 14068, and science-based targets. All The Carbon Stamp assessments are GHG Protocol Corporate Standard aligned, ensuring accuracy and recognition across all UK compliance frameworks.

How does a carbon consultant differ from a sustainability consultant?

A sustainability consultant covers a broad range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) topics — energy efficiency, waste reduction, social impact, supply chain ethics, and more. A carbon consultant specialises specifically in greenhouse gas measurement, reporting, and reduction — with deep expertise in GHG Protocol methodology, DEFRA emission factors, and compliance frameworks like PPN 006, SECR, and ISO 14068. The Carbon Stamp focuses exclusively on carbon — meaning deeper technical expertise and faster, more accurate delivery than a generalist sustainability consultancy.

How long does a carbon consultancy engagement take?

Timeline depends on scope. A basic Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint assessment takes 4–6 weeks. A full Scope 1, 2 and 3 assessment with PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan typically takes 6–8 weeks. ISO 14068 carbon neutral certification (including footprint, reduction plan, and offset sourcing) typically takes 8–12 weeks end-to-end. For clients with urgent tender deadlines, The Carbon Stamp can accelerate delivery — Carbon Reduction Plans can be delivered in as little as 2 weeks once data collection is complete.

What is SECR and do I need it?

SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) is mandatory for UK companies that meet two of three size thresholds (250+ employees, turnover over £36m, balance sheet over £18m) AND use more than 40,000 kWh of energy annually. If you qualify, SECR requires annual disclosure of energy consumption (kWh), Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (tCO2e), and an intensity ratio in your company's annual accounts. The Carbon Stamp assesses whether you qualify and delivers fully compliant SECR reports. Read more: SECR reporting requirements →

What frameworks and standards does The Carbon Stamp work with?

The Carbon Stamp works across all major UK carbon compliance frameworks: GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (Scope 1, 2 and 3 measurement), PPN 006 and PPN 06/21 (government and NHS tender CRPs), NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap, SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting), ISO 14068 carbon neutrality standard (replacing PAS 2060), DEFRA emission factors (updated annually), and B Corp environmental requirements. We do not currently offer SBTi validation or EU taxonomy reporting.
