What carbon consultancy actually means for an SME

A carbon consultancy helps your business measure, reduce and report greenhouse gas emissions. We collect your energy, fleet, travel, waste and supply-chain data, calculate Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard using current UK Government conversion factors, and produce the report your buyer or regulator actually needs.

Most of our clients come to us for one of four reasons: a PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan for an NHS or public-sector tender, SECR compliance, a customer ESG or EcoVadis questionnaire, or ISO 14068 carbon neutral certification. We deliver all four under one fixed fee, in 4 to 8 weeks.

The work a carbon consultant does for you

    • Sets the reporting boundary and consolidation approach so the footprint covers the right legal entities and sites.
    • Collects the activity data: energy, fuel, fleet, business travel, commuting, waste and supplier spend.
    • Calculates Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to the GHG Protocol using the current year's UK Government conversion factors.
    • Writes the report in the format the buyer or regulator expects, PPN 006, SECR or an ESG questionnaire.
    • Builds a prioritised reduction roadmap so the plan is credible, not just a number.

When you need a consultant, and when you do not

If you run a single site, have tidy energy data and no deadline, you can get a long way on your own. Estimate your footprint free and see how far the gaps are. You need a consultant once someone is going to audit the answer: a buyer scoring a PPN 006 plan, a bank or enterprise customer running an ESG questionnaire, or a tender that fails without a credible signed footprint. At that point the cost of getting the methodology wrong outweighs the fee.

What a carbon consultant costs in the UK

For a UK SME, a one-off carbon consultancy engagement covering Scope 1, 2 and material Scope 3, with a report you can hand to a buyer, is a fixed project fee, not a day rate. Ours are published in full below and start at £895+VAT. The fee scales with employee count, number of sites and how deep the Scope 3 work goes.

That is usually a fraction of the contract value or customer relationship the report protects. The most expensive outcome is a rushed, non-compliant report that fails a tender you were otherwise going to win.

What moves the fee up or down

Number of sites. A single office is quicker to scope than a multi-site manufacturer.
Scope 3 depth. A full supply-chain footprint takes more data handling than Scope 1 and 2 with headline Scope 3.

Expedited delivery: a +20% uplift brings a report to 10 business days.

How to choose a carbon consultant

Most carbon consultancies describe themselves in similar terms. These are the seven things that actually separate a report that passes procurement from one that does not, and how we answer each.

    1. GHG Protocol alignment, stated plainly

What good looks like: The report should say, in the methodology section, that it follows the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. Vague references to "best practice" are not the same thing.

How we answer it: Every report is built to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and says so, with the boundary and consolidation approach written down.

    2. Current DEFRA conversion factors, with the year named

What good looks like: Emission factors are updated every year. The report should name which year's UK Government (DEFRA / DESNZ) factor set was used.

How we answer it: We use the latest published UK Government conversion factors and cite the year in the report.

    3. A named person signs the report

What good looks like: Procurement and assurance want accountability. A company logo on the front page is not accountability; a named consultant or director signature is.

How we answer it: Frazer Holroyd signs every report personally. No junior handover, no offshore data team.

    4. Evidence their reports have passed procurement

What good looks like: Ask for an anonymised sample and for named examples of tenders or frameworks their reports have been accepted into.

How we answer it: We can share anonymised deliverables and name recent successful submissions, including J Hopkins Contractors and Medicom Healthcare.

    5. Scope 3 handled category by category, with gaps declared

What good looks like: A credible consultant works through the 15 GHG Protocol categories, tells you which are material, and states where the data is estimated.

How we answer it: We scope Scope 3 against all 15 categories, cover the material ones, and write any spend-based estimates and their limitations into the report.

    6. A fixed fee against a defined scope

What good looks like: An open-ended day rate transfers the risk of a slow project onto you. A fixed fee against a written scope keeps it with the consultant.

How we answer it: Fixed project fees, published by employee band, agreed before you commit.

    7. Next year's update priced before you commit

What good looks like: Carbon reporting is annual. Find out what the re-baseline costs now, not after you are locked in.

How we answer it: We re-baseline the following year at the same fixed fee, with no renewal mark-up.

Warning signs worth walking away from

    • An open-ended day rate with no cap on scope or total.
    • Offsets sold to you before anything has been measured.
    • A carbon neutral claim with no reference to ISO 14068 or PAS 2060.
    • No named author or signatory on the report.
    • A refusal to show an anonymised sample of previous work.
