Madre de Dios Amazon REDD Project - Peru

Overview

The Madre de Dios Amazon REDD Project, the first of its kind to be dual-certified under CCB and VCS standards in Peru, is leading the charge in sustainable forest management across nearly 100,000 hectares of tropical rainforest. Operated by MADERACRE SAC, the initiative has not only halted deforestation within its jurisdiction but has also significantly enhanced biodiversity, all while fortifying the livelihoods of local indigenous communities. This initiative is particularly critical in a region experiencing some of Peru's highest deforestation rates, making it an essential area for conservation and sustainable development.

The project is lauded for its innovative approach, which includes forest patrols, inventories, and sustainable management practices, earning it a Gold Level validation. MADERACRE SAC has established a 40-year, renewable concession with the Peruvian government, underscoring a long-term commitment to the environment and the local economy. The project's success has been marked by a significant reduction in deforestation and improvements in the biodiversity index. Furthermore, community engagement efforts have resulted in valuable partnerships with the Belgium Native Community, leading to job creation, educational opportunities, and enhanced quality of life, thereby supporting a model for sustainable and inclusive growth.
