Overview
The Niassa Reforestation Project, situated in the northern region of Mozambique in Niassa Province, is an ambitious 5,242 ha reforestation endeavor initiated by Niassa Green Resources SA, a subsidiary of Green Resources AS. Targeted at reviving three distinct parcels of degraded land, the project’s broader aim is to address climate change while simultaneously fostering sustainable environmental management, community development, and alleviating poverty in Mozambique.
By planting non-invasive pine and eucalyptus species, the project is slated to remove an impressive 471,692 tCO2e total GHG over its crediting period, averaging an annual removal of 23,585 tCO2e. In addition to its significant environmental impact, the Niassa Reforestation Project promotes socio-economic growth within the local communities. It achieves this through the creation of job opportunities, training programs, and by allocating 10% of the carbon revenue for developmental programs decided by community representative committees. The initiative also paves the way for infrastructure enhancement, including the development of roads, bridges, and public buildings.
The commitment to environmentally sustainable practices is further emphasized by the project's alignment with the criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) and the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS).
