Overview

The Baspa hydro-electric power project, located in the scenic region of Himachal Pradesh, is a significant step in India's commitment to harnessing renewable energy and combatting climate change. Managed by the Jaiprakash Hydro Power Limited, a branch of the esteemed Jaypee Group, this project boasts a robust installed capacity of 300 MW.

One of its standout achievements is the estimated removal of 10,524,810 tonnes of CO2e emissions from 2006 to 2016, highlighting its substantial contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project is strategically placed with its diversion barrage on the river Baspa at Kuppa, while its powerhouse is stationed in the Kinnaur District's Karcham village.

Notably, its barrage sits at an impressive elevation of 2600 metres, setting a record for the highest of its kind in India. Adopting a run-of-the-river design, the project focuses on short-term water storage, emphasizing 4 hours of peak capacity within a 24-hour period, especially vital during the winter's reduced river flow.
